NEWSDUSK: Farewell Interzone@TYPE, recent Books, Mags & Zines, Zardoz, etc.

Posted by demonik on September 21, 2011

NEWSDUSK: Farewell Interzone@TYPE, recent Books, Mags & Zines, Zardoz, etc.

Gregory Pendennis Nun More Sinister

The Vault forum doesn’t leave me as much time as i’d like to post regular news updates, but there’s been plenty to report of late so lets get down to business.

Firstly, it is our sad duty to report that interzone books are no longer an ongoing concern. The TYPE shop still stands and is always worth a visit but, alas, no more row upon row of beloved pulp paperbacks to wade through! It was brilliant while it lasted and we thank Milan for all the effort he put in and wish him well with his future endeavours. We understand he is still planning for the Zardoz Book Fair on November 6th and it is highly likely there will be a scowling vault contingent staggering about the Plaza basement.

On the anthology front, personal favourite of recent months has been, predictably enough, Charles Black’s Eighth Black Book Of Horror. I hope to have copies of the Paul Finch edited Terror Tales Of The Lake District and Gary Fry’s Death Rattles (both Gray Friar Publications) shortly, so avoid our forum for next few weeks unless you wanna be subjected to my entirely worthless verdict on same.

Lots of magazines! As posted earlier, Justin Marriott’s indispensable Paperback Fanatic has now clocked up twenty superb issues in five years, an incredible achievement! The second issue of Martin Jones’ Bedabbled!: British Horror and Cult Cinema is imminent – a ‘Cult Of Satan’ special and, from a rough pdf i’ve seen, a very impressive beast it is, too. Have also received the first five issue’s of Cranston McMillan’s wildly entertaining a-bit-of-everthing-really! fanzine, Kontinental X. The links for these last two lead straight back to the Vault forum, mainly because neither mag has much of a web presence just yet though you can catch up with Martin on faceache.

Sara of the very beautiful My Love Haunted Heart is interviewed at some length on her passion for vintage Gothic Romance over at the impressive After Dark In The Playing Fields. And good luck to The Outdoor Co-ed Topless Pulp Fiction Appreciation Society in their quest to “make reading sexy.”

thanks for reading

Bloody kisses,

gloomy sundae

Death To 2011!

Posted by demonik on January 5, 2011

Belated Happy New Year, dear reader.

Vault go erotic! The Vault forum kept me plenty occupied in 2010 hence lack of so many updates on here, but will try and knuckle down over coming months. There’s a hefty backlog of stuff to go on the Fontana pages and i’m determined to bring the long threatened saucy paperback section (back) to life this year along with a few more tasty treats.

so concludes this big Vault rubbish announcement!

thank you for your continued support! :)

David A. Riley interview & Other news

Posted by demonik on July 9, 2010

dear reader

Beyond, debut issue April/May 1995: Cover: Martin McKenna

a very infrequent proper blog-type post/ news update. E. London has been hit by a devastating vintage horror & supernatural anthology famine hence lengthy silences. been amusing myself with hamlyn nasties and giant preying mantis extravaganzas to keep my hand in. also, the Vault forum is still as hugely popular with everyone as ever and we’ve a tasty interview with David A. Riley who’ll tell you all about ‘The Curse of Beyond‘!

what else? Paperback Fanatic 15 is out now, we understand that The Seventh Black Book Of Horror is on the horizon (plan is to have publication coincide with FantasyCon whenever that is), Wordsworth continue to expand on their exquisite Mystery & The Supernatural series and we hope to have some EXCITING NEWS about Interzone books very shortly!

finally, a thank you to whoever it was kindly *ahem* ‘voted’ for Vault in the BFS awards. in all honesty, we had enough grief over all that nonsense last year, hence immediate quiet withdrawal from field. but the thought was much appreciated by the core guys.

love,

The Burley Observer: Vault Newsdesk

Posted by demonik on June 26, 2008

Boring Site news: a double dose of Castor oil for yers!

READING IS FUN!

Reading is fun!

illustration: Chrissie Demant

1. The Burley Observer.

As any ‘news’ items were fast swamped under a tidal wave of anthology posts with the inevitable result that nobody got to suffer them, I figured it would be best to give them a stand-alone section, hence The Burley Observer. Events, new & forthcoming publications, works in progress, etc. Little, if anything, that’s not already appeared on here, but the ‘site’ seems to attract a slightly different audience to the board and perhaps it will become a useful promo tool. Items already added include Paperback Fanatic 7, 3rd Black Book Of Horror, The Thinking Mans Crumpet, Pantechnicon 7, details of the BFS meeting at Ye Olde Cock Inn, Fleet Street on Sat. 19th July, One Eyed Grey 5, Basil Copper: A Life in Books, Peter Normanton’s Mammoth Best Horror Comics, Robert Tinnell & Adrian Salmon’s delightful graphic novel The Faceless and Paul Gravett’s Mammoth Best Crime Comics.

If you’ve not already spontaneously combusted with excitement, those of you who’d like details of your own current & forthcoming books, magazines, WIP’s and what have you to be included, email me and we’ll see what we can come up with. This service, I should point out with as much tact as I am capable, is primarily, but not exclusively for regular contributors to the Vault of Evil forum and the friends and supporters of same. Leaving a solitary post or two on here or the board of the dreaded “Great site! I am the webmaster of blah, blah, blah and my great book/ site/ limerick will be the ultimate work on blah blah f**king blah ” variety is hardly in keeping with the spirit of whatever it is Vault is about, so I thank you in advance for reserving such for your MySp*ce and Face-Ache hourly bulletins.

2. New English Library

Hopefully of more interest: I’ve been working on the NEL section of the site on-off for a few months now, trying to select the best reviews by a variety of desperadoes from both this and the dead suddenlaunch board. It’s nowhere near ready to go ‘live’ yet and with Justin’s NEL horror overview set to continue in the next Paperback Fanatic, I’ll continue to keep it private until …. well, Halloween is always good for a launch and that leaves plenty of time to mess it up!

Thanks, as ever, for your kind support.
